2nd and 3rd TRIMESTER
DILATION AND EVACUATION (D&E) - 13-20 weeks
The cervix must be opened wider than in earlier procedures. Laminaria (absorbent plant product) is inserted 1-2 days prior to the abortion. Tubing is connected to a suction machine and inserted into the uterus to break the amniotic sac. Forceps are then used to tear apart the baby's body and remove the pieces. The skull may be crushed to facilitate removal. Suction is used to remove any remaining materials from the uterus.
HYSTEROTOMY - 14-38 weeks
This procedure is basically a premature cesarean delivery. An incision is made in the uterus and the baby is removed and left to die if it is still alive when delivered.
HYSTERECTOMY - 14-38 weeks
This procedure is used when another has failed and/or when the mother wants to be sterilized at the time of her abortion. The baby is removed with the uterus and dies usually during the procedure.
PROSTAGLANDIN ABORTION - 15-30 weeks
A syringe is used to inject Prostaglandin (a chemical hormone) into the amniotic sac. This hormone induces violent labor and premature birth. Since prostaglandin results in an unusually high percentage of live births, saline, urea or another toxin is often injected first.
SALINE ABORTION - 16-24 weeks
This method was first used in Nazi concentration camps. A needle is injected into the abdomen, and some amniotic liquid is removed. This is replaced by a concentrated salt solution that is swallowed by the baby and burns the baby's skin. Sometimes the solution is sweetened so the baby will swallow more. Within three days the mother goes into labor and delivers a dead, burned baby.
UREA ABORTION - 16-24 weeks
This method is basically the same as the saline abortion, but urea is used instead of saline. It is considered to be a safer method for the mother, but can be less effective and may be supplemented by the use of oxytocin or a prostaglandin. Urea is a nitrogen based solution that is commercially used in the creation of plastics, fertilizers and animal food.
DIGOXIN INDUCTION - 20-32 weeks
A syringe is used to inject Digoxin into the baby's heart. Laminaria (absorbent plant product) is then used to dilate the cervix, and labor is induced to deliver the dead baby.
DILATION AND EXTRACTION (D&X) - 20-40 weeks
AKA Partial Birth Abortion
2 days prior to the procedure, laminaria (absorbent plant product) is used to dilate the cervix and medication is given for cramping. On the third day, medication is given to induce labor. The doctor does an ultrasound to locate the baby's legs, then grasps a leg with forceps and delivers the baby up to the head. Scissors are then inserted at the base of the skull to create an opening. A suction machine is used to remove the brain. The skull collapses and the baby is removed.
